- Client's Need
Transcend Innovation, an educational startup born out of former members of the Motorola UI division, needed someone who could convert design concepts and very large sets of data into usable website architecture that would provide a very visually stimulating, engaging experience for users of all ages, especially targeting middle/high school students, teachers, and college counselors.
- My Solution
Providing both technology consulting and acting as the lead developer on the project, I updated wireframes and designs to engage users effectively. Over the course of a nine month contract, I led a small team of three other designers and developers to create the beta version of CareerNoodle. During this time, in addition to coding all the XHTML/CSS of the site and creating a modular XHTML/CSS framework for future designer/developers, I designed and coded several interactive applications including an AJAX interactive profiling system and a progressive, weighted search application. The interactive profiling system tracked results on a user-level across 180 questions as well as displayed and sorted career datasets from our database of 900+ careers based on the user's questionnaire responses. For the progressive, weighted search application, I created a custom-written PHP implementation of the Paice/Husk (also known as Lancaster) stemming algorithm as a modular toolkit based on a C implementation. The system then searched a weighted search database of roughly 200k records to find and define the most highly related careers to the search terminology. In addition to these two primary applications, the main Flash developer and I combined our efforts to create interaction between Flash designs he created and the primary PHP/MySQL database application. The project also involved aiding in managing the technology related to video production and editing.
